Wow! What a nice surprise this is. An artist that combines the best of Utopia
circa Ra with Todd Rundgren’s classic solo Hermit Of Mink
Hollow is more than I could ask for!
Mark Costoso aka Cos is the mastermind behind this gem of progressive pop. The
production is immaculate and he plays nearly everything here with a guest guitarist aiding
on one track. Costoso lists the usual suspects Yes, Genesis etc as
influences, but it’s Rundgren and Utopia that comes through loud and
clear. Yet even with this strong influence running through the disc, Costoso does add his
own personal touch to the music making this more than just a copy of a better known
band. I won’t do a track by track run down, only because each song is excellent in it’s
own right.
I recommend this CD to those who appreciate the pop genius of Todd Rundgren
and would like something along the same lines, but also to those who enjoy solid
songwriting, fine musicianship, and something outside the norm of the usual progressive
rock offerings. Although released in 2002, this is the best CD I have heard this year and
Cos is a talent to watch out for. Let’s hope there is more to come! Time to pull out my
copy of Something / Anything? for a spin.....
